Back in the early 1970s, the FAPD 5101 was issued to U. S. Air Force navigation crews as a no-frills tool built to survive the cockpit rather than impress on the wrist, and this 36mm reissue brings that original brief back with remarkable restraint. Rather than modernize the formula, Hamilton leaned into the source material: a matte case finish that kills glare, fixed strap bars that lock the watch in place on the wrist, and a dial kept legible above all else.
A special military heritage engraving on the caseback ties this piece directly back to its 1970s namesake, and the whole watch is limited to production throughout 2026, timed to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The 36mm stainless steel case is compact by modern field-watch standards but true to the original's proportions, finished at a slim 10.
2mm thick and topped with a period-correct acrylic box crystal rather than sapphire, giving the dial a warm, slightly domed look under light. A khaki cotton strap in the classic pass-through military style completes the reissue, fixed to those non-removable bars just as it was on the source watch.
Underneath, the H-50 is Hamilton's dedicated hand-wound caliber, built specifically for manual-winding watches like this one and good for up to 80 hours of power reserve, so the watch keeps running even after a few days off the wrist. A Nivachron balance spring adds resistance to magnetic fields and temperature swings, while Super-LumiNova Grade X2 on the hands and markers keeps it readable after dark, and a protective dust cover shields the movement, a detail pulled straight from the original military spec.
