Crafted in Japan by Ichiko Ichie, this Kawara Clay Incense Holder embodies the beauty of tradition and artisanal skill. Made from authentic kawara clay – celebrated for its durability and rich texture – each piece is carefully hand-glazed to perfection. A harmonious blend of functionality and timeless Japanese craftsmanship, it makes an elegant addition to any incense ritual.
For more than 1,400 years, kawara clay has been an essential material in Japanese craftsmanship. It has long been used to create kawara tiles, the iconic roof tiles found on temples, shrines, and historic buildings across Japan. First introduced from China during the Asuka period (6th–8th century), these tiles quickly became a hallmark of Japanese architectural artistry.
Known for its strength and earthy texture, kawara clay is naturally weather-resistant, making it ideal for protecting buildings while adding subtle beauty through its rich, muted tones. Over time, this versatile material has found new life in artisan goods – from pottery to decorative objects – ensuring its legacy endures in modern Japanese craftsmanship.
