Buy NowA small piece of metalwork for a square of cotton. Kobashi Studio's bandana ring is cut from a 1.5 mm plate of solid brass and taken through every step by hand – cutting, forming, hammering, finishing – by a metal artisan in Hokkaido, Japan. It closes a bandana at the neck without a knot, and it does the job for as long as brass lasts, which is longer than the bandana.
The surface is tsuchime, the traditional Japanese hammered finish, worked by hand until the metal carries a texture no machine repeats. This is the Tate – 'vertical' – version: the marks run up and down the band, laid down with a hammer the artisan made himself for the purpose. Hammered brass catches light softly rather than glaring, which gives the ring a warm, almost natural look, and because each piece is struck by hand, no two are the same.
Inside, each ring is engraved with 'Kobashi' in katakana as a mark of authenticity. The brass is left unlacquered, so it will darken and take on a patina with wear and handling. Every ring comes in a handmade suede pouch of Japanese-tanned pigskin. Dimensions: 2.5 × 1.7 cm (approx. 1 × 0.7 in), sized to take a rolled bandana.
