Buy NowA crew neck reduced to what matters. Mooncastle, the Osaka knitwear house, makes this sweater from 100% superfine Australian merino – the finest grade of the fiber, which is why the surface has a soft sheen and a smooth, almost silky hand, and why it sits against bare skin with little of the itch coarser wool brings. It is knitted in a 12-gauge plain jersey: fine enough to go under a jacket or over a shirt without bulk, dense enough to hold real warmth and to last.
The shape is drawn to be worn, not noticed. Ribbed cuffs and hem hold with a moderate grip rather than pinching, and the body follows the torso in a clean line that works with tailoring as easily as with jeans and sneakers. Beige melange – a heathered, undyed-looking tone – was a color Mooncastle sold last year only in its own stores and at select Japanese stockists; it is now offered while stock lasts.
Care is simpler than most merino: machine washable on a gentle cycle, turned inside out in a mesh bag. Smooth out the creases while it is wet and dry it flat, or hung over a thick pole, and it keeps its shape. As with all knitwear, expect a variation of 1–2 cm between pieces. Made in Japan.
Fit Notes: This pullover follows Japanese sizing and runs a bit small. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size for a comfortable fit – an L fits similarly to an American M. The 12-gauge jersey is fine and close to the body, with ribbed cuffs and hem that hold with a moderate grip, and knitwear can vary by 1–2 cm from piece to piece. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting garment to ensure the right fit.
