A tenugui is a common household item in Japan. These versatile cloths can be used as anything from washcloths, to headbands, to simply for decoration. These tenugui from the brand Okawahara have been hand dyed using the nori-zome technique.
Nori-zome is a dyeing technique that utilizes rice paste to create intricate designs. By applying the paste to the cloth, artisans block out specific patterns. When the fabric is dyed, the protected areas remain the original color of the cloth, resulting in sharp, detailed imagery.
With a legacy spanning over 200 years, Okawahara preserves the ancient nori-zome technique to honor the traditional dyeing culture of Kagawa Prefecture. By blending this meticulous craftsmanship with modern innovation, they continue to produce vibrant, high quality pieces that bring Japanese heritage into the contemporary world.
