Along the road to Hāna I found myself surrounded by trees of eucalyptus after a sunshower. The smell was a revelation. First comes a sharp breath of eucalyptus bark and green stems snapped fresh underfoot. Camphorous and humid notes of green apple, moss, and hinoki evaporate from its undergrowth, giving it an ozonic quality that can only be captured when rain lifts off of plants in the mid-day sun.
