SUGAR CANE Fiction Romance 5oz Indigo Check Work Shirt

About this product

The Sugar Cane Fiction Romance 5oz Indigo Check Work Shirt is a refined fusion of traditional Japanese textile heritage and classic mid-century American workwear design. The fabric is inspired by vintage indigo-dyed textiles originally used in traditional Japanese garments, carefully sampled and reinterpreted while preserving the original yarn character and pattern integrity.

The check pattern is constructed using a three-tone indigo kasuri-dyed warp paired with a single-color weft, forming a clean rectangular grid pattern with remarkable depth and subtle variation. This specialized yarn-dye process creates a fabric that feels both visually rich and quietly irregular, giving the shirt an authentic handmade character that becomes even more expressive with wear and fading.

Weighing just 5oz, the fabric is lightweight, breathable, and exceptionally comfortable, making this shirt ideal for year-round wear – perfect on its own in warmer months or as a layering piece under jackets and overshirts during cooler seasons.

The silhouette is based on a 1940s–1950s American work shirt, featuring the characteristic double flap chest pocketsthat define the era. What truly sets this piece apart is Sugar Cane’s meticulous approach to construction: unlike most work shirts, the chest pocket flaps and pockets are carefully pattern-matched to the check fabric, a rare and labor-intensive detail that speaks to the brand’s uncompromising craftsmanship.

Built from 100% cotton and finished entirely in Japan, this shirt balances heritage-driven design, advanced textile development, and timeless wearability. The result is a work shirt that feels light and effortless on the body, yet rich in story, texture, and long-term aging potential – designed to evolve naturally through years of wear.

Fit Notes: Although this is a Japanese-made shirt, Sugar Cane sizing runs closer to Western standards than typical Japanese fits. If you usually wear a size M in American shirts, we recommend selecting a…
