Buy NowThe Flat Head’s latest Hawaiian shirt is a masterclass in Japanese craftsmanship and vintage inspiration. Based on authentic 1940s–50s picture-patterned shirts, this piece features a meticulously hand-printed design that evokes the rich colors of the sky and sea through subtle gradients and vivid detail – something that simply can’t be achieved with standard printing techniques.
Crafted from 100% rayon fabric woven on vintage shuttle looms using rare high-twist yarns, the shirt offers a crisp, dry hand-feel with a beautiful drape. Though lightweight, the fabric carries a satisfying heft and structure, capturing the spirit of true vintage rayon shirts.
The multicolor pattern is applied using traditional 'Tenassen' hand screen printing (手捺染) – a meticulous and time-intensive process in which each color is printed individually with custom oversized screens. Unlike digital printing, which is fast but flat, Tenassen brings depth, vibrancy, and soul to the fabric. This artisanal method allows for exceptionally detailed designs and can be used on nearly any textile, producing rich color saturation – even on the reverse side. Executed entirely by skilled Japanese craftsmen, this process demands absolute precision and patience. Aligning complex picture graphics seamlessly from edge to edge – across the placket, chest pocket, and body panels – is a true mark of expertise. The result is a visually stunning shirt that feels as special as it looks.
Every shirt is constructed using rolled seams, a labor-intensive method that ensures durability and a clean interior finish. Rayon is notoriously difficult to sew, but The Flat Head’s skilled artisans handle it with finesse, even adding carefully executed gathers to the back yoke for improved movement and comfort.
Finished with classic cat’s-eye coconut buttons, this shirt radiates vintage aloha style with uncompromising Japanese quality. It's not just a shirt – it’s a piece of wearable art, built to be appreciated up close and…
