The UES Amundsen Shirt, named after legendary Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen, is a showcase of Japanese craftsmanship and textile innovation. Developed in Bishu, Aichi Prefecture, this shirt features a one-of-a-kind fabric that goes far beyond typical heavy flannel. Woven with 7-ply and uneven weft yarns, the result is a fabric with remarkable volume, texture, and depth.
Its distinctive Amundsen weave produces a soft matte finish, while rope-dyeing in indigo yields rich, varied shades that develop character with every wear. The fabric is slowly woven on vintage power looms, limiting production to just 50 meters per day – making each shirt a rare and highly crafted piece. A brushed interior enhances softness and warmth, while the slow-weave technique delivers both durability and loft.
True to UES’s philosophy, slight irregularities in the fabric are intentional, reflecting the beauty of traditional methods. Cut in a slim, tailored silhouette, the Amundsen Shirt pairs effortlessly with jeans or chinos, blending comfort, style, and heritage in a truly exceptional garment.
Fit Notes: This Japanese masterpiece features a slim cut and is indigo rope-dyed, resulting in impressive high-contrast fades over time. It tends to run slightly small compared to American sizing. Due to the Japanese fit, we usually recommend going one size up from your regular U.S. size. For example, if you typically wear a Medium in American brands, a size 3 (L) in this shirt should fit well. As always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the most accurate fit.
