At the time, Levi’s® jeans were primarily worn in the American West, where they had developed a dedicated following. In contrast, consumers on the East Coast were largely unfamiliar with the button-fly work pants.
To appeal to this new market, the original 501® Shrink-to-Fit™ Jean was modified by replacing the traditional button fly with a zipper, resulting in the creation of the '501® Z.' All other iconic features remained unchanged - including the signature silhouette, durable rivets, and tough-yet-flexible denim.
