Lightning Archives: Suka Jacket is a beautifully curated volume from the renowned Lightning series, dedicated to the rich history and cultural significance of Japan’s iconic souvenir jackets.
Across 257 pages, this edition traces the evolution of the Sukajan (Yokosuka Jacket) – from its origins as a souvenir for American soldiers stationed in post-war Japan to its status as a defining piece of Japanese streetwear. Featuring classic baseball-style silhouettes adorned with intricate embroidery of tigers, eagles, dragons, and maps, the book captures the bold visual identity that defines these garments.
Through rare examples, reversible designs, and detailed close-ups, the volume highlights the craftsmanship behind traditional horizontal-swing machine embroidery, as well as the regional variations and symbolism embedded in each motif.
Combining striking visuals with insightful commentary, this archive offers a deep look into the fusion of American and Japanese influences that shaped one of the most distinctive garments in vintage culture.
