The Yonetomi Extra Fine Wool Rib Knit Pullover is a refined essential that showcases the brand’s mastery of material development and knit construction. Crafted in Japan from 19.5-micron ultra-fine Italian merino wool, this sweater delivers a rare balance of elegance, durability, and everyday practicality. The wool offers a silk-like luster and a cashmere-soft hand feel, with a smooth, non-itching texture that feels luxurious directly against the skin.
The knit employs a deliberately minimalist approach, using the flat 'flounder' texture – typically found on the reverse side of rib knits – on the exterior. Decorative techniques are intentionally eliminated, allowing the structure, density, and texture of the knit to take center stage. Knitted to the absolute limit of density, the fabric feels reassuringly substantial, with tightly closed stitches that provide excellent cold protection, shape retention, and long-term durability.
Rather than relying on a single thick yarn, Yonetomi weaves multiple fine-count yarns – normally reserved for high-gauge knits – on a middle-gauge setup. This method creates a fabric with depth, resilience, and a refined surface, resulting in a sweater that resists pilling, holds its form, making it ideal for long-term, habitual wear.
The clean, set-in sleeve construction and classic crew neckline highlight the subtle shadowing of the rib texture, creating a beautifully balanced silhouette when worn. With its moderate volume, this piece works effortlessly as a standalone knit, while the smooth surface allows it to layer easily under jackets or coats during colder months.
Produced in Yamanobe, Yamagata Prefecture, a historic center of Japanese knitwear, this pullover reflects Yonetomi’s vertically integrated approach. Since 1952, the brand has handled everything – from yarn and textile development to knitting and finishing – entirely in-house. With a production system specializing in low-gauge knitting and decades of technical refinement,…
